i'm a digest reader, so belated thanks to Matt, Cedar, and Dan.

I have scarfed a copy of .xmodmap from the archives and have had some 
success.  as Cedar puts it, i need to lather, rinse, and repeat to get 
the file completely setup for my needs.

one thing that's causing me some grief is that when i open an xterm and 
try running Xev, i DON'T get any output.  For example, the oft 
mentioned test for 'a' and 'b' yield nothing.  But, the remote does 
work for the arrow keys and the 'ok' button at the bottom of the remote.

i'll dig into it more tonight (monday, EST) i'm sure, but thanks for 
the feedback and the encouragement.

btw, in my readings i found that someone did use a custom xmodmap for 
xine that got loaded with a startup arg to xine, allowing for 
application specific mappings.  i don't remember the URL, but it's safe 
to assume it can be done.
