When fighting to make my Radeon AIW card work, I learned that the issue
is that the init required to get the AIW series cards ready to
overlay/capture is nontrivial. /dev/videoX does become available once
the card is initialized and xawtv or avview are running. Supposedly this
is true even if you minimize or move xawtv offscreen. Admittedly, I
haven't run a capture test with that scenario, as I gave up on the AIW
before that point. If the last bit is true, it would be possible to
start X, start the backend with a hack to use xawtv-remote to control
the tuner, and then start the frontend, in that order... I have no idea
what kind of work would be needed on the backend to make this ugly
scenario work. I don't intend to try. My Radeon AIW is back in my
winblows machine.
