The point is is XvMC is implemented in the hardware of the GeForece4
440MX Series of cards, it has nothing to do with the capabilities of
XFree86 beyond the fact that the binary drivers that nVidia has chosen
to release are for XFree86 and these said drivers allow XFree86 to make
use of the XvMC feature of the line of cards and hence why MythTV has
support for XvMC.

Okay, I'm going to stick my neck out there and pretend like I know
something when I probably don't. As far as I understand it, XvMC isn't
specifically an Nvidia GeForce thing. Off the top of my head supposedly
the i810 graphics chip supports it. The XvMC features are for Motion
Compensation and have been a part of XFree86 since at least 4.2.0.
However most cards do not have accelerated motion compensation, thus do
not implement the features in a library. The GeForce MX is one of the
few. Now my personal experience with the whole thing has been less than
pleasant. I'm trying to watch HDTV feeds and it hasn't gone well. With
XvMC enabled on my Ti4200 everything goes slower with more choppiness
than without it on. So I went out and bought a GeForce MX and got very
similar results even with the IDCT acceleration. Now I don't know, maybe
the drivers aren't that good or maybe something's missing in the
implementation, but either way, for me it's been a dog. If others have
had different experiences I'd love to hear about it. For me though, the
combination of a black and white OSD, with less than stellar performance
adds up to me not wanting to use XvMC at all.
To the original question of will it work on your ATI card. No, it won't.
Maybe they'll support it eventually, I don't know if they even have the
hardware builtin, but right now, don't even bother trying to compile it.
