[mythtv-users] Switch to ALSA from OSS sound problem

Ok,

  I'm an idiot.
I skipped the ALSA install fallowing Jarod's excellent tutorial.
And found the output sound level to the TV to not be to my liking. So
I figured the ALSA install would correct this problem, right?

So I installed ALSA, and that went great. Rebooted.
Started gnome-alsamixer, and turned everthing on. Eventually found a
jack on the back that played /usr/bin/aplay
/usr/share/sound/KDE_Startup.wav out of the TV. Fabulous.

Now when I start 'mythfrontend' and go to view a recorded show, or
live TV, I hear no sound
at all. I can still do 'aplay' of WAVs out of the TV, and
PC-speaker-beeps are coming out of the TV, but MythTV-sound is not
coming out of the TV.

Did some groveling over the newsgroup, found the mod that if I add
'-ao alsa9' to my mplayer invocation:
   mplayer -ao alsa9 /some/previously/records/show
-or even-
  mplayer -ao alsa9 /dev/video0
I can get sound. So the recordings seem to be working. The PVR-250 is
clearly bringing in a signal, but ... *shrug*

I fiddled with all the 'Setup->General' options for sound, choosing all
of them at one point, but
failed to hit a working combination.

What have I done wrong, and, more importantly, how do I fix it? :-)
