Aug,

The steps you listed above confuse me. I can't seem to
locate them in Jarod's documentation. My suggestion
would be to uninstall and then reinstall LIRC.

Next,

# export KERNEL=`uname -r`
# apt-get update
# apt-get install lirc-kmdl-$KERNEL
# apt-get install lirc

Then follow the config steps. Besides the uname and
update commands, I've followed Jarod's documenatation
on LIRC to the letter with much success.
