I will give debian a try:

looks promising. And I can compile my modules against a custum kernel and
wont have to care about unresolved symbols.

IŽll keep the list posted.

IŽll try two partitions one with the current redhat install, one with debian(sid)

I can playback recorded files with about 25% CPU usage, but I also have occasional
and rebuffering errors (there is a fix in CVS from today, IŽll update my source tree
tonight). What is funny though it plays a transcoded recording (640x480 divx) without
stuttering, even at ~90% CPU. Seems to be some issue with the HW decoding.

As above, I will try debian this night, first setting up myth 0.11 from deb, compiling 
ivtv, and when thats ok IŽll go for HW decoding.
