i'm somewhat confused: its partially the dextromethorphan, its also the 
subject... this may have been better as a new thread.

the first couple of things that come to mind:

1. i'm not sure how Axel builds lirc and whether it will work in your 
situation. there has been a thread about this in the last couple of weeks 
which may be worth a look. the log line "lircd(hauppauge) ready" looks to 
me like its expecting an i2c device whereas it seems you have a serial 
receiver. what is in your /etc/modules.conf file for loading lirc? what 
does "/sbin/lsmod | grep lirc" indicate is loaded? worst case scenario, you 
may need to download lirc's cvs and compile it yourself for lirc_serial.

2. is your device hooked up to your second serial port? you may want to try 
other serial ports on your board.
