Pete,
You didn't provide any errors encountered or config files being used, but
one guess may be that you need to do a setserial on the serial port before
you can use it for lirc. I built the simple receiver and had no problems
after
I did a setserial on the port (I only have 1 serial port. If you have more
than 1 it may not be necessary). If you try this and it doesn't fix the
problem try reposting with syslog output, config files, /etc/modules.conf
settings etc.
