Don't know, mine just works.  I'm running gentoo, lirc-0.6.6, two
Hauppauge WinTV-dbx's, and  I get two devices under /dev/lirc:

# ls -l /dev/lirc
total 0
crw-r--r--    1 root     root      61,   0 Dec 31  1969 0
crw-r--r--    1 root     root      61,   1 Dec 31  1969 1
