Replying to some old mail here... I also have a C-Media 9739 on my  
motherboard (MSI Neo-2).  I ordered an MSI S-bracket (SPDIF out) and  
just last night got audio out to my receiver via coax SPDIF, under ALSA  
0.9.8.  No hiss via all-digital :-)  Mixer settings are a bit odd...  
you have to turn the "IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA" entry all the way down  
(and some other, more-obvious settings), then you get signal out via  
SPDIF.
