[mythtv-users] OT: lirc-0.7.0pre2 installation confusion

I have a similar problem. I can compile ok. lircd seems to start ok. When
I run irw it just sits there waiting for me.

The difference on my system is that I'm running KnoppMyth and a serial
remote rather than the Hauppauge one. However the error/problem is the
same. I did have a conflict with the kernel serial module, but I disabled
this.

I have tried removing Lirc-0.7.0pre2 and installing using apt-get install
lirc. I did actually get this working at some point, but unfortunately I
didn't write down all the steps I tried from the various
mails/archives/howto's etc. I seem to remember I did need the kernel source
to complete the compile though ?

Even following the www.lirc.org howto for lirc_serial gives this exact same
problem.

Rgds,
Pete

p.s I can't find it on the lirc stie, but is there a searchable archive for
the Lirc mailing list ?

I have 0.7.0pre2 installed. When it starts I get this in messages:
Nov 18 09:51:48 mythtv lircd 0.7.0pre2[3707]: lircd(hauppauge) ready
Nov 18 09:51:48 mythtv lircd: lircd startup succeeded

When I try to start irw it immediately goes right back to a prompt and I
get this in messages:
Nov 18 09:51:53 mythtv lircd 0.7.0pre2[3707]: accepted new client on
/dev/lircd
Nov 18 09:51:53 mythtv lircd 0.7.0pre2[3707]: could not open /dev/lirc
Nov 18 09:51:53 mythtv lircd 0.7.0pre2[3707]: default_init(): No such
device
Nov 18 09:51:53 mythtv lircd 0.7.0pre2[3707]: caught signal

I have this in /dev:
[root at mythtv /]# ls -l /dev/lirc*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 61, 0 Nov 4 18:25 /dev/lirc
srw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 Nov 18 09:51 /dev/lircd
prw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 13:53 /dev/lircm

Any suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks,
James
