You aren't wrong, and there are multiple factors involved. I generally 
recommend not using the secondary (slave) IDE channel if it can be avoided, 
especially for drives that are members of a RAID or LVM array. This may not 
be the sole cause of your problem, but it's a big first target to eliminate.
