ahh, just saw the other email mentioning
chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/init.d/lircd 

seems to have done the trick :)

I tried using the lirc.redhat script, that seams to fix the problem for chkconfig , but..sadly...
# cp lirc.redhat /etc/rc.d/init.d/lircd
# /sbin/chkconfig lircd on
# /sbin/service lircd start
lircd: unrecognized service

thoughts?

It's interesting to see this post. For sometime now, I
thought I was the only one having this problem. Today,

I decided to do a bare metal install just in case I
messed something up while trying to diagnose the
problem.

I also noted, the "bleeding" reference for apt-get is
no longer there.

Good luck. Please report back if this works. In about
2-3 hours, I should be at the LIRC install of Jarod's documentation.
