What exactly would you gain by doing that?  I could see the attraction 
for an analog tuner (i.e., don't do simultaneous encode/decode until 
you have to so as not to tax the CPU unnecessarily), but if you have a 
HW encoder & decoder, what are you gaining by not using one of them?
