Yeah, I'm sure there must be a way to get the right behavior in KDE or 
Gnome/Metacity, but the path of least resistance certainly seems to be 
to use a lightweight WM like FVWM or Blackbox.  I don't think I've ever 
heard of someone on this list having a focus problem with either of 
those.
