This conflict resolution strategy sounds good to me. 

I still think a "global" option would be good for a lazy user
like me. I think specifying a limit of 5 min of overlap recording
(and have it use use the program rank field to decide which
show to record completly or give preference to the show
endings in the cases where the rank is equal).

the recording database will ned to be modified to accept the
"trimmed" start/end time of recording values, right? In the
case of the conflict resolution dialog handling, the database will
also need to "remember" the trimming choice for the automation
of that situation in the future. 

Should this discussion move over to the development list?
