What is the contents of your .xawtv file in your home directory?
More specifically, what does the mixer line say?

Mine says :
mixer = line
So it could be that a simple change in the .xawtv file will enable
you
to do this.

I am using the OSS drivers, and use Myth and Xawtv in the fashion you
describe.  So it is very possible.

Well not using Myth for now but that's another story (see the "TV
noise problem" thread)...
