I had a similar washed-out look to my recordings, and I fixed it (somewhat 
- I will probably do some more tweaking, but it's *much* better now) by 
playing with the brightness and contrast settings of the ivtv driver.

Use the test_ioctl program that comes with the driver to set the 
parameters, something like:

test_ioctl -y brightness=132,contrast=75

You can also mess with the hue and saturation levels the same way.  
"test_ioctl -h" will show you all the options you can change, as well as 
the valid value ranges.

You can do this while watching a live recording and see the results almost 
instantly.
