I don't think focus is the issue. Pressing the escape key on the 
keyboard and pressing the key on the remote bound to escape should be 
functionally equivalent, regardless of window focus. Escape is escape, 
so they ought to do the same thing. For reference, I'm running MythTV 
0.9.1, atop KDE 3.1/RHL9.

Aha. Okay, pressing my OK button (bound to 'space'), which is normally 
the select button in MythTV, does pause mplayer. I'll dig around in 
mplayer's settings to see if I can remedy that.

My best guess at the moment is that mplayer isn't properly releasing 
control of the remote, but I'll poke around some more...
