Ken, I noticed from another one of your posts that you're on Mandrake
9.1.

Mandrake's default lirc installation is broken.  I found that I had to
actually delete the lirc module, located here:  

/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/3rdparty/lirc

Once I did this, and then performed a new installation of the latest CVS
version of lirc, and then a reboot and the necessary modprobes.....
Voila, it worked.
