Well, all of the ALSA drivers start with "snd-" so "sb" won't
be the ALSA driver. Check /var/log/syslog when you try to
load snd-sbawe to see if there is any more information. If
"snd-sbawe" won't load some possibilities are that the module
may not be installed for the kernel to find (did your run
"depmod -a"?) try

depmod -av 2>&1 | grep snd-sbawe

Or, the card may actually be a different model (for instance,
a SoundBlaster 16 PCI may actually be an Ensoniq; been there,
done that). Try "lspci -v" and look for the "Multimedia audio
controller:" to see what model it is reporting.
