Thanks Chad.  I'll give that a try.  No problem with building fresh kernels;
it's 2nd nature.  I've been using (and occasionally contributing) to Linux
since 0.12, and other Unixen since well before that.

Odd.  I had no major problems getting ALSA setup and working under RH9.
In fact I've used three different drivers (onboard, Santa Cruz, & AW744)
and all worked after some tweaking.  LIRC was another matter, but once I
got that conquered the stuttering was the only major problem left.
