Isn't there a way to stop mythtv from encoding stuff in realtime all the
time?

I don't think a P3 500 will cut it, unless you get a PVR-250 (hardware MPEG
encoder/tuner). It could be useful as a frontend, if you have a beefier
machine for the backend...
