The .boot file is a special format created from a pcx, and a config 
file.  http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/help.html has info on how 
they're created as well as the nessesary software (both the lilo changes 
and mkbootmsg).  The config files make my head swim, I modfied the Suse 
logo config file to make the one I made, but there's some rather 
elaborate onese there too.
