[mythtv-users] 2.6 kernel and via XFree86 driver

You'd be better off posting this question in the Linux Forum at viaarena. The clexf bundles only work under the specific distributions, as seen in the directories of the bundle. Yes, they do say not kernel specific but that's not true.
My understanding is kernel 2.4.23 with the epia patch (find information in the linux forum) and also look at www.ivor.it/cle266 page. I don't believe 2.6 is supported, either by Via or by the open source drivers.

I am trying to run MythTV on a VIA EPIA M10000 Nehemiah under a 2.6.0
kernel. Is it possible to use the via XFree86 driver under the 2.6
series of kernels? I can get the vesa XFree86 driver working
and it correctly recognizes the size of the frame buffer (64MB) and the
characteristics of the monitor that allow it to run at a VESA mode of
1280x1024 at 75Hz.

I have tried to install the via driver from the CLEXF40038 bundle on
viarena.com but it seems to want to have a couple of kernel modules
via.o and via_v4l_drv.o installed. I can install those files in
/lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/... but they are not recognized as
modules and
modprobe via
or
modprobe via_v4l_drv
with fail with an error message of "Module via not found".

If I change /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to use the via driver it will start
up but it fails to detect the amount of video memory correctly (it
detects 4 MB instead of 64 MB) and it fails to detect the HorizSync
and VertRefresh ranges correctly with the result that it will only use
a 640x480 at 60 resolution.

I am running the Debian testing distribution initially installed from
Knoppix. The XFree86-related packages that are installed are

ii xbase-clients 4.2.1-12.1 miscellaneous X clients
ii xfonts-100dpi 4.2.1-12.1 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-base 4.2.1-12.1 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-scalabl 4.2.1-12.1 scalable fonts for X
ii xfree86-common 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System (XFree86) infrastructure
ii xlibmesa-dev 4.2.1-12.1 XFree86 Mesa development libraries pseudopac
ii xlibmesa-gl-de 4.2.1-12.1 Mesa 3D graphics library development files [
ii xlibmesa-glu-d 4.2.1-12.1 Mesa OpenGL utility library development file
ii xlibmesa3-gl 4.2.1-12.1 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86]
ii xlibmesa3-glu 4.2.1-12.1 Mesa OpenGL utility library [XFree86]
ii xlibs 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client libraries
ii xlibs-dev 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client library development f
ii xserver-common 4.2.1-12.1 files and utilities common to all X servers
ii xserver-xfree8 4.2.1-12.1 the XFree86 X server
ii xterm 4.2.1-12.1 X terminal emulator
ii xutils 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System utility programs

Is my best option to go back to the 2.4 series of kernels?
