Eh?!? Did you not ever get a "boot:" prompt? And what happens if you 
press F1-5 before the kernel starts loading? You *should* see various 
explanation texts of different things you can do. I believe F5 is some 
docs on rescue mode. You ought to be able to type in "linux rescue" at 
the prompt and be able to go to town. If you're not able to do any of 
the above, something is amiss with your installer CD, because that's 
been typical of Red Hat installation CDs for some years now...

I did not know about the F1-5 option.  I did read through the steps at RHN but apparently there was either a step missing or I messed up.

There's always Knoppix (or the Gentoo or most any other live CD). The 
Linux Bootable Business Card (lnxbbc) is also a good option. (I've been 
playing with PHLAK some lately, though that live CD is intended for a 
bit different use... :).


I ran a Debian rescue iso,  and it did get me to maintenance mode.  Ran fsck on /dev/hda1 and saw a whole mess of things I was not comprehending, cloned I-Nodes seemed to be predominant.   I don't think my interaction helped one bit.
