Here's another I just ran across. I started testing, and it looked like all 
the cable I had pulled was either wired wrong or otherwise bad. I was able to 
get a link, but no valid frames would pass. One set worked, but the others 
were all bad.

Turns out it was the patch cable I was using was bad, not the house wiring! 
The one room that worked did so because I had already run a different cable 
to use there. Doh!

Assume nothing. :-)
