I've now sorted this, and have LIRC working with this case/remote/vfd combo.

Im not 100% sure of when and why MythTV will use the VFD, can anyone give
some examples. However, I can get LCDd running, and lcdproc will display
content to the VFD.

If anyone needs help on getting this working, do not hesitate to ask, and
I'll attempt to get it written down so that it can be FAQ'ed or added to the
docs.
