Well, if you're *absolutely sure* that no non-myth processes have /dev/
dsp open, then I'd say your sound card (or at least the driver you're 
using) doesn't support full duplex.  Something does have /dev/dsp -- 
mythfrontend needs it for playback output.  If your card doesn't do 
full duplex (i.e., simultaneous record & playback) then mythbackend 
can't open it for recording.

It might help to post your tuner card setup, sound card & sound drivers 
(ALSA or OSS & version number).
