I have a standard gold-plated high freq range splitter (expensive little
booger from Home Depot) that splits my cable signal from my modem.  I
didn't want the crap supplied by the cable company so had this installed
and ready.

There's nothing special about the split at _my_ house though your cable
company may be different.  I wouldn't recommend amping the cable modem
signal, though.
