Just signed up so this message probably won't be threaded properly, but 
I thought I'd mention that I too have this exact same problem.  As far 
as I can tell everything is setup properly.  I can watch live tv fine 
forever, and I can record one show perfectly fine, but if I try to 
watchtv or record anything after that,  the empty mpeg problem occurs, 
and requires me to reload ivtv module, which usually means rebooting.

I had a feeling it was a ivtv problem, so I download the very latest 
source direct from cvs last night and that still didn't fix the problem.
