I use tags, not directory structure. I find it more practical and flexible. I
have a straightforward artist/album/title directory structure, which makes it
very easy to manage the files, but all my files are tagged with category and
genre information as well. This is very flexible and practical, and really
cuts down on my need to make tons of playlists.

For example, I can go straight to "Keola Beamer" and play one or more of his
albums, or I can just as easily play all music tagged as "Slack Key Guitar"
which will play all the songs on all the albums I have of slack key
guitarists.

All that is required is to pick a consistent tagging scheme and tag all your
files. Under Linux, I find easytag to be a great tool for that. Then set up
mythmusic to use the tags appropriate for your tagging scheme.

I have also run all my ogg files (I don't use mp3) through vorbisgain to tag
them with loudness information to be used by the player to play everything
back at a consistent volume. (This is better than normalization, and more
effective.) So far is seems that mythmusic's player does use these tags, but
I haven't convinced myself of that yet. I need to do a test with some files
that have dramatically different volumes and see if they are indeed adjusted.
