[mythtv-users] OT: [prob way OT] devfs and lvm

I really apologize for posting this question here. I've read through the docs on lvm and devfs and neither cross reference each other. Also have searched through the archives of both mail lists (devfs and lvm) with little information. I'm not even sure the devfs is still operable, arhives had one spam for December. I'd be more then happy to take this offline is someone can point me in the right direction. This is though all for a MythTv system.

I need devfs though for the framebuffer stuff and well when I installed this system (RH9) thought LVM was the way to go (still do).

Anyway, I've compiled kernel 2.4.23. I ran into a problem though on make install, due to me mucking up /lib/modules/prevkernel . I generated a system.map and vmlinuz file but no initrd. I think this is okay because I'm not booting from SCSI devices. I've managed to pass the correct append in lilo.conf to get my "non-lvm" root to boot. After that it all goes to hell.

First, the symptoms, system goes into kernel panic. The trouble begins in this order:

1-mount_devfs_fs(): unable to mount devfs, err: 2 / I'm pretty sure this is do to me not changing the names over in /etc/fstab. This is the bulk of the confusion. Without LVM, I think the entires in fstab would be /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2. Instead I have /VolumeGroup00/LogVol01 , then LogVol02 , etc. Since I have no way to know for sure what should go into fstab , I fear mucking with it trash my options to boot into the previous kernel.

2-"Warning: Unable to open an initial console"

3-"Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel" This is the enigma wrapped in a riddle, at least looking over the kajillon links that pop up with that warning as a search phrase. I do have an initrd directory in my root directory [top level].

So maybe someone can shed some light ?

Sorry again for posting here.

Stuart
