The pain and effort currently required to get Mythtv up and running
is definitely not worth it if you just want to watch TV. OTOH if
you treat this as a learning experience you'll get good value, but
not if you run to the mailing list every time you hit a minor snag.

Try to develop a trouble-shooting approach. Something like:

Problem: Error message says can't open mysql socket:

1) Verify that socket exists (ls -l ....)
2) if it does not, find out who was supposed to create it (mysql daemon)
3) Is mysql daemon running ? (ps -ax ....)
4) If not, can it be restarted?

etc. etc.

At each step, the answer will send you in one direction or another.
Never assume anything! If in doubt, check things using more than
one technique. When you need to know something, Google is your best friend.

At the end of the process, you will have your socket, and know a LOT
more about mysql than when you started. One day you WILL be a guru,
not because of what you know, but because of the techniques you have
to find things out!

Have fun.
