I bought the cable from an Internet site. The URL
escapes me, but it's one of the more popular sites for
pin-outs, and other LIRC information. I think I paid
$15 for the whole thing, one very, very short cable
with an RJ-45 connector on one end and an RJ-4(?)
connector (the same as used for a phone handset jack)
on the other. The RJ-45 connects to a 9-pin serial to
RJ-45 connector which I believe can be purchased at
Radio Shack.

I hope that helps. I want to reiterate, channel
changing works for me in shell as root. I'm still
getting a RECV error but at the least the channel is
changing. Lastly, it did not start working until I
used the script specifically for the DRD420RE.
