[mythtv-users] More "Failed to create lirc socket"

So I've reviewed the threads on lirc and the problems
with receiving the following on mythfrontend startup:

mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: No such file or directory
Failed to create lirc socket for mythtv

I'm receiving the same message and I can't figure out
where to go.

I've got a PRV-350.  I'm running Mandrake 9.2 with the
2.4.22-10 kernel (2.4.22-10mdk #1 Thu Sep 18 12:30:58
CEST 2003 i686) and I followed the direction in the
"installing and using MythTV" guide for native lirc in
MythTV under Mandrake 9.2 (including downloading and
installing the lirc-CVS-i2c-2.8.0.patch).  I've
deleted all old versions of lirc modules and I've
recompile MythTV (so that solution to someone else's
version of the same problem doesn't appear to work
here).

I've both tried starting lircd and not starting it
prior to running the Myth frontend.  I've tried
modprobe of lirc_i2c and not.  I'm at a loss.  

BTW, I'm a Linux newbie, but I've been programming off
and on in C and C++ on Windows for about fifteen years
-- so I can follow directions, but might not have the
best insight!
