Interesting that you mention this.  I just struggled for a while working this out.  On my xmame.x11 binary (0.72) it segfaults while scanning for ROM's, and hence fails to find any, if the history.dat is specified as a directory.  I added in a few debug statements and it became obvious what was happening, but I had assumed that it was just a badly phrased question.  Thanks for filling in the blanks
