If you're using Red Hat 9 with the OSS drivers, this
will get rid of the echoing:
aumix -lM -lR

This sets the "Line In" to record and mute.

"capture" port, as ALSA calls it.  On my card
(Soundblaster Live), it's the "input gain":
aumix -i 75

This sets the "input gain" to 75%.
