Bringing up an old subject.

I don't know if any of you have looked at a windows product called SageTV.

It has (IMHO) an elegant way of dealing with the recording of live tv,
saving of programs from the start, etc. It basically is recording ALWAYS,
and you are always viewing a recording. Doesn't use a ringbuffer as far as I
know. So for example, if you start watching a show 1 on ch 3, and then show
2 on channel 4, it makes a recording called show1-ch3-[date-time] and a
recording called show2-ch4-[date-time] and so-on. Note that you are ALWAYS
WATCHING A RECORDING. So if you rewind, it just goes to the previous
recording. These recordings are the 1st things to be deleted to make room
for other recordings. If you happen to want to keep one of the recordings,
you just mark it as "keep" and it doesn't get deleted. The amount of time
required to switch channels is enough to create the new files. If you
happened to start watching a program in the middle, if the tuner was already
on that channel when you started watching, you'd be able to watch the show
from the beginning. It could be set up so that if you're not currently
watching, the tuner would change to your most favourite channel if it had no
scheduled recordings to do, just in case you happen to start watching you
could see a program from the beginning (and have a recording of it). The
possibilities with multiple tuners and multiple favourite channels would
make sure that when you started watching, you're likely to have your
favourite shows already available to you.

Might take a major change in the design to go from the ringbuffer model to
the "always watching recordings" model, so I guess people will need to speak
up to see if that's something they want and if the developers are
interested.

And BTW - just like the max ringbuffer space setting that already exists,
the automatic recordings space could be limited to stop your hd from filling
up with unwatched programs. Also, this might not be for everyone, so it
should be able to be switched off.

Thoughts??

-Andy.
