Thanks, that helped.

I did

# hdparm -M 128 /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
setting acoustic management to 128
acoustic     = 128 (128=quiet ... 254=fast)

and the sound stopped !

Now how do I test if performance has degraded or not ? Is there any test
program ?

I tried

# hdparm -tT /dev/hdb

/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.24 seconds =533.33 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.25 seconds = 51.20 MB/sec

This is the exact same number as before setting acoustic to 128. Does
that mean I still get the same performance ?

thx,
Saravanan

Try removing the disk from the drive bay and holding it suspended, or place it on something soft at the bottom of the case - if this helps then look at the "overclocking" sites for a wealth of stuff made out of bungee rubber...
