There's probably an acoustic management function you need to turn on.  Check Seagate's web site.  You can also do this under Linux with hdparm, although I have never trusted this - I'd rather use a utility provided by the drive manufacturer.

This is also true of pretty much every other drive.  I've found drive manufacturers to be inconsistent with how they set their acoustic management depending on how they're positioning a drive in the marketplace.  For example, I have two Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9's - one of which purchased retail, the other purchased OEM through Newegg.  The retail version had acoustic management turned off on initial boot and was extremely loud.  The OEM version had acoustic management on and set to quiet.  Performance of all current IDE drives is roughly the same given the same acoustic management setting.  A drive set on "quiet" will perform perfectly well for Myth...

My Maxtor drives are both extremely quiet now with AM turned on.
