I don't know which "how to" you are referring to, but there are 
instructions for compiling the kernel for red hat right in the mythtv 
docs. http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-8.html#ss8.4
Just make sure you are using the red hat supplied source.
