[mythtv] Protocol version check failure in *buntu ppa v0.28-pre-3476-g87e72e9

Updated the laptop today from master.20160114bb1a090 to 20160123.87e72e9 
in trusty ppa x86_64

The frontend screen comes up, slowly, but selecting an entry gives this, 
repeated until the frontend is stopped:
