As Raymond noted, livetv is not considered by MythTV as one 
continuous stream but a series of recordings, each of a different 
programme. The liveTV chain is the internal representation of those 
recordings so that they are shown to the user one after the other 
without apparent gaps, like individual links in a chain. The liveTV chain 
keeps a record of which file (which recording) to show after the present 
one and similarly which one comes before it if you were to rewind/seek 
backwards.
