Hah - what a perfect coincidence...
This program perfectly matches my recent project: simplification of my 
home MythTV system. Target is to have only backend running. I discover 
that having no any kind of frontends (standalone, web,etc) will lead to 
tremendous space, noise, power & maintenance savings :-)
As potentially my family might be upset - I consider telnet ASCII as 
video output.
I know, know - this is ambitious goal....
