Right, the "If you're using a new enough version..." part was more of a 
"you should be using current -fixes so you'll get all of the bug fixes 
that go in there suggestion.

But, as you said, the playback picture controls (F) work in any 
version--the challenge in versions without the fix is finding the right 
values for a given video card.  (So, it's generally easiest to upgrade 
to a revision with the fix.  :)
