And indeed, sometimes the data we want out is so simple that it's just a
single mysql query which simply begs for the mysql command line client.

Fair enough, if your needs are that complicated.  Sometimes though, as I
said, a one-liner does it all.  It's just a shame that such a one-liner
now needs to suck in all of the overhead and complication of XML for
what is a very small, uncomplicated set of data.
