As the author of the patch in question, I want to emphasize that I
feel it is overly complex and invasive for such a small benefit, and a
far better solution would be to correct the fact that redrawing a tiny
corner of the screen 70 times per second consumes so many CPU cycles.
Perhaps the ticket can stay open just as a reminder of that direction.
