Great. Please let me know what you find. I'd be happy to update to a
newer version of FreeFont fonts, but as long as we're doing so, it would
be nice to use current. If they don't work, though, we may be able to
update to the 2008 version you mentioned.
I still haven't gone in to trace the QFontDatabase code (and/or the
freetype2 code) to see if it actually loads fonts that are already
available on system, but I have a suspicion that it doesn't.
Oh, and note, also, that now your system font-replacement rules come
into play, too. So, if you have any rules in
/etc/fonts/fonts{,-local}.conf or /etc/fonts/conf.d/* that apply to the
FreeFont fonts, they may result in your getting a completely different font.
Thanks, again, for investigating the caption font setting issue. It's
always the small things that get overlooked, so having a fresh pair of
eyes look at the issue helps. I should have known when it was first
mentioned, but it never hit me.
