Thanks for the pointer. upgrading to the latest nvidia driver did fix
the problem, however other things broke (so for know I will jsut not use
the opengl painter).

Just for reference the item that broke was when entering a
video/recording the screen what sometimes show junk left over from other
screens (such as menu items, etc.) but I could here the sound.

This ticket can be closed as a driver issue. Thanks!
